The new Vanlifezone map is finally live

More than 250,000 places, real community insights and a much bigger vision for life on the road: the new Vanlifezone map brings together campsites, practical travel services, honest updates, warnings and community knowledge in one place, with plenty of room to grow.

For a long time, Vanlifezone has been a place for stories. Stories from people who travel with vans, campers, overland vehicles, old buses, new builds, improvised setups and big dreams. Stories from Europe, Australia, the Americas, Asia and many other corners of the world. What connected all of them was always the same love for the freedom of the open road. But the best kind of freedom comes with good information, respect and a community that shares what it learns along the way.

Today, we are incredibly excited to take the next big step in that direction. The new Vanlifezone map is live and for us, this is much more than just another feature on our website. It is the result of many months of hard work, a lot of testing, many small improvements and a big vision that we have been carrying with us for quite some time. Some of you may have already stumbled across the map during the past few weeks. We quietly made it available before this announcement to gather real world feedback, identify issues, refine and make improvements based on how people actually used it before officially introducing it to the wider audience.

The new map already includes more than 250,000 camping and overnight locations across Europe and the world. You can use it to discover campsites, motorhome areas, practical services, travel related places and community contributed information. But the part we are most excited about is not only what is already on the map. It is what you can add to it.

Green markers represent campsites, blue markers show caravan and motorhome sites, and larger blue markers with article icons indicate adventure reports and travel journals shared by the Vanlifezone community. A location search bar is displayed at the top, while zoom and navigation controls appear on the right side of the map.

With a Vanlifezone account, you can contribute to existing places, add new locations, leave comments, share experiences and help other travelers understand what is really happening on the ground. Maybe you know a campsite that deserves more attention. Maybe you found a peaceful place where you had one of those mornings you will never forget. Maybe you also came across a spot where camping is no longer tolerated, where signs have been put up, where there were conflicts with locals or police or where travelers should simply be more careful.

All of that matters.

On the left, a user places a pin on the map to mark an exact location. On the right, the user selects a location type including campsite, caravan site, wild camping spot, information point, or warning. This feature allows campers, vanlife travelers, and overlanders to contribute camping locations, travel information, local insights, and safety warnings to help build a collaborative map for the global camping and travel community.

We do not want the Vanlifezone map to be a collection of perfect looking places without context. We want it to become a living source of inspiration and information, created for the community and shaped by the community.

That means showing where you can go, but also where you probably should not stay.

It means sharing beautiful places, but also sharing warnings. It means helping each other travel better, safer and more respectfully.

This idea has been with us for a long time. Vanlifezone started as a result of a personal journey in an old Volkswagen van. What first began with sharing vanlife inspiration on social media slowly grew into a bigger platform, a global community and now a map that connects travel stories, practical information, environmental awareness and community knowledge.

Building this was not always easy. We are a small team and Vanlifezone is still fully bootstrapped. There is no big company behind it, no large investor team pushing from the background and no unlimited budget. We are just a few people who believe in the project, who care deeply about the details and who have spent a lot of time figuring out how to turn a big idea into something that people can actually use.

One of the most important moments during the development was our Testing Party in Graz. We invited a group of people from different backgrounds, different age groups and different levels of experience with camping, technology and travel to test the platform with us. It was not a polished product presentation. It was exactly what a real test should be: honest, sometimes chaotic, full of questions, full of small issues and incredibly valuable.

Florian Jaunegg, founder of Vanlifezone, speaking to an audience during the first Vanlifezone Testing Party at Ducks Coffee Shop in Graz, Austria. Participants are gathered around tables in a relaxed workshop setting while learning about the new Vanlifezone map and upcoming platform features. Travelers, campers, designers, entrepreneurs, and technology professionals tested the platform, discussed user experience improvements, identified issues, and shared feedback that helped shape the future development of the community driven camping, vanlife, and travel platform.

People clicked differently than we expected. Some things that felt obvious to us were not obvious at all. Some parts worked better than we hoped, while others clearly needed more attention. That feedback helped us improve the map before this public launch and it reminded us why we want to keep building Vanlifezone close to the people who actually use it.

More than just campsites

Of course, overnight places are a huge part of the new map, but they are not the whole story. We also wanted it to be useful during all the other parts of a trip that usually force you to open five different apps. That is why the map also brings together practical services and travel related places like garages, camper rentals, shops and other useful stopovers that can make life on the road a little easier.

The business marker is highlighted on the map near Hartberg, while users can explore the surrounding area, discover nearby campsites and caravan sites, view company information, and access directions. This example demonstrates how businesses in the camping, campervan, outdoor, and travel industry can showcase their services through dedicated business profiles on the Vanlifezone community driven camping and travel platform.

In other words, this is not only a map for finding where to sleep. It is also a map for everything around the journey itself.

Places with real context

One thing we really wanted to improve was what happens after you click on a place. A pin on a map is only the beginning. The interesting part is the context behind it.

The new place pages are meant to make locations feel much more alive. Instead of just showing a name and a point on a map, they can include reviews, comments, photos, practical details and the latest updates from the community. That makes it easier to understand not only what a place is, but also what it feels like, how recent the information is and whether something important has changed.

The campground page shows community contributed updates submitted by a user, including visit logs, photos, updated opening hours, facility information, and location details. A green campsite marker highlights the campground on the interactive map, while the update feed demonstrates how campers, vanlife travelers, and overlanders can share real world experiences, maintain up to date campground information, and help build a collaborative camping and travel knowledge base for the Vanlifezone community.

Add, update and improve places together

The map is built to grow with the people who use it. If you have a Vanlifezone account, you are not limited to browsing. You can actively help improve what is there.

You can add new places, suggest edits to existing ones, log your visits, leave reviews and share details that others would never get from a static listing alone. Over time, this can turn the map into something much more honest and much more current than a directory that is only updated from one side.

The left screen displays update categories such as name and description, contact information, facilities, prices, opening periods, and other changes. The right screen shows the facilities editor, where users can update campsite amenities including toilets, showers, drinking water availability, Wi Fi, electric hook ups, waste disposal, pet policies, laundry facilities, charging stations, tent access, and caravan access. This community contribution feature helps campers, vanlife travelers, and overlanders keep campsite information accurate, up to date, and useful for the wider travel and camping community.

Important information, not just nice looking places

Another thing we care deeply about is that useful information on the road is not always beautiful or glamorous. Sometimes the most valuable thing on a map is not a recommendation, but a heads-up.

That is why the map can also include warning and information-based contributions. If a place has become problematic, if signs have appeared, if access has changed or if something simply deserves more caution, that can be part of the picture too. For us, that is just as important as highlighting the places people love.

Screenshot of the Vanlifezone map displaying a community contributed warning marker that alerts travelers to local camping restrictions. A red warning icon highlights a location where camping and overnight stays are prohibited, while the information panel provides details about posted camping prohibition signs and advises visitors to respect local regulations. The warning can be updated by community members and serves as a tool for campers, vanlife travelers, and overlanders to share important safety information, legal restrictions, and local travel conditions, helping others avoid fines, conflicts, and unsuitable overnight locations.

But it is not just warnings or information markers. One feature that already existed in the first version of our map is back with the latest available data: Natura 2000 protected areas across Europe.

If you have spent time traveling through Europe in a camper or van, you have probably come across the topic before. Natura 2000 is the European Union's network of protected areas, created to preserve important habitats, ecosystems and wildlife. These zones can be highly relevant for travelers, not only from an environmental perspective but also because camping and overnight stays are mostly restricted within them. Every year, travelers unknowingly find themselves in protected areas and end up facing high fines or conflicts that could have been avoided with better information.

Screenshot of the Vanlifezone map displaying a Natura 2000 protected area along the coast of southern Portugal. The environmental protection zone is highlighted in red and represents part of the European Union's Natura 2000 network, which protects important habitats, biodiversity, and endangered wildlife. The information panel explains the purpose of the protected area and advises travelers to respect local regulations regarding camping and overnight stays. By integrating Natura 2000 data directly into the map, Vanlifezone helps campers, vanlife travelers, and overlanders identify environmentally sensitive areas, make informed travel decisions, avoid potential fines, and explore Europe more responsibly while protecting vulnerable natural landscapes.

For the new map, we updated our Natura 2000 layer using the latest available dataset, ensuring that the information reflects the most recent additions and changes across the European Union. Just like before, the data remains highly accurate and can help travelers understand exactly where protected areas begin and end.

At the same time, we know that environmental protection does not stop at Europe's borders. Natura 2000 is only the first step. In the future, we hope to integrate additional protected area datasets from other regions around the world, including North and South America, Australia and beyond. Our goal is not to discourage exploration, but to make it easier to travel responsibly while protecting the places that make these journeys worthwhile in the first place.

Business locations with practical value

The new map is not only useful for travelers. It also creates a space for businesses that are genuinely part of the camping and outdoor ecosystem. Campgrounds, campervan rentals, workshops, conversion specialists, outdoor stores and other travel related businesses can now be discovered in the same place where people are already researching destinations, planning trips and looking for useful information.

Business locations can be added free of charge because they contribute to the overall information ecosystem of the map. Businesses that want additional visibility can unlock extra features through a subscription, including links to their website, social media profiles and external booking platforms. Each business location also receives its own search engine optimized page on Vanlifezone, making it easier to be discovered both by travelers using the platform and through search engines, AI assistants and other online discovery channels.

The dedicated campsite page includes photos, facility information, seasonal details, and a detailed description of the campground, while the interactive map highlights its location within the surrounding natural landscape. This example demonstrates how campgrounds and tourism businesses can showcase their services through dedicated business profiles on Vanlifezone, allowing campers, vanlife travelers, digital nomads, and outdoor enthusiasts to discover camping destinations, compare facilities, access important information, and plan their next adventure more easily.
A free business location: business owners maintain full control over the information on their listing - @vanlifezone 06/2026

What matters most to us is that business locations do not feel separate from the rest of the platform. They are part of the same travel experience as campsites, information points, warnings and community contributions. While business owners maintain full control over the information on their listing, users can still discover these places organically, leave reviews, share experiences and contribute valuable context. We believe this creates a healthier balance between visibility for businesses and transparency for travelers.

If you would like to learn more about business locations, visit our business page, where we currently offer a limited lifetime access option for early supporters.

What comes next

Even now, we do not see this release as the finish line. In many ways, it feels like we are only halfway there. The foundation is now live, but the bigger vision is still ahead of us. We want to make it possible to save private places, plan routes, keep personal collections, share selected spots only with friends and create a more personal travel experience around your own journeys. We also want to keep improving the community features, the quality of location information and the way people can contribute to the map and interact with it and oneanother.

Your feedback matters so much right now!

We invite you to explore the new map, create an account and become part of this next chapter. Add your favorite campsite. Share a wild camping or boondocking spot that others should know about. Update an existing location if something has changed. Leave a warning if a place has become problematic. Comment, review, contribute and help us build something that becomes more useful with every person who takes part.

Vanlifezone has always been about inspiration, information and community. With the new map, these three ideas finally come together in a much more practical way.

We're certain there are still a few bugs hiding in the code and there is always room for improvement. If you encounter a problem or have an idea that could make Vanlifezone better, please don't hesitate to let us know through our feedback form or by contacting support@vanlifezone.com.

What happens next is no longer just up to us.

It depends on the stories you share, the places you discover, the information you contribute and the people you help along the way. We cannot wait to see where this journey takes us next!

It's been a wild ride getting to this point. There were plenty of challenges, late nights, setbacks and moments where things didn't go according to plan, but seeing the map finally come together makes all of it worth it. I'm incredibly proud of what our small team has accomplished with the resources we had and at the same time, it feels like we're only getting started! There is still so much more we want to build, improve and explore together with the community. Thank you to everyone who tested, contributed and supported Vanlifezone along the way. This launch belongs to all of you as much as it does to us!
